Steel plate versus sheet requirements
When buying steel sheet or plate, specify the exact grade and product standard, thickness, width, length and whether delivery is in flat sheets, cut plates or coils. ST37 and ST52 are common market references; the requested material certificate governs acceptance.
Flatness, surface condition, dimensional tolerance and any fabrication requirement may affect suitability and commercial pricing. A galvanized coil has different product characteristics from a hot-rolled plate.
What changes the steel plate price?
Plate prices are influenced by thickness and dimensions, grade, production source, cutting service, quantity, inspection, transport and shipment handling. Theoretical weight may assist in initial planning, but actual invoiced weight and specifications must be established in the sale terms.
A comparison between two quotations should use identical grade, size, tolerance, certificate and named delivery point. A single public market number is not a verified quote.
Export packing and inspections
An export enquiry should state the destination, quantity, dimensions and acceptable standards, as well as required tests and surface protection. Loading and moisture exposure can be important considerations for flat steel during transit.
For semi-finished feedstock see steel slabs. For coated flat products, review the galvanized coil information.
