What is a steel slab?
A steel slab is a relatively wide, flat semi-finished steel product supplied to rolling facilities manufacturing plate, sheet and coil. Buyers should specify the intended downstream application, because its steel chemistry and dimensions have to match the receiving mill.
Slabs differ from square steel billets, which are generally used to roll long products such as rebar. Incorrect terminology can lead to a technically unsuitable offer.
Steel slab quotation requirements
A slab price enquiry should provide the required grade, chemical limits, width, thickness, length, surface acceptance criteria, tonnage and location of delivery. Inspection reports and material traceability requirements should be agreed before booking.
Availability, production source and readiness for dispatch may influence the quote. A generic indication of price is not evidence that the desired dimensions or quantity are in stock.
Slab export and shipping
Export shipments require consideration of the loading plan, weight, securing, transport route, import-country requirements and agreed commercial documents. The appropriate Incoterms rule and named delivery point should be stated on the transaction documents.
If the intended product is hot-rolled plate, compare the steel plate supply information. For square semi-finished stock review billets.
